POSTCARDS: Sorbetes along Ongpin

TWO2TRAVEL | Postcards | Manila | Binondo

A day is not enough to explore every nook and cranny of Binondo in Manila, the world’s oldest Chinatown.

People on foot and on bikes, SUVs and horse-drawn carriages locally called calesas come and go from every direction. It’s easy to get lost in this dizzying maze of food and people and noise and shops, of old Chinese men taking a long drag off their fat tobacco cigs, of rickety bikes with baskets as big as grocery carts, and sorbetes vendors that are never at the same spot each day. It’s nowhere near sober, but those who love the gritty and the chaotic will feel right at home along Binondo’s colorful streets.

Owen Ballesteros & Nikka Corsino are trigger-happy travelers from the Philippines. They both swear by the sharpness of Nikon and almost always carry a packet of instant coffee when traveling. Photography is their bread and butter, their passion, and sometimes the only thing that prevents them from killing each other. If you have offers of work, collaborations, or an endless supply of instant coffee, please drop them a message here.
