Stoked in San Juan 1.0

Last December 12—a very photogenic date on our calendars—Owen and I headed to San Juan in La Union to take photos of special kids who were given free surf lessons by the San Juan Surf School.

Covering this event was something new for us, and somehow it was a good—nay the right—end to a year that we think has brought many beautiful changes in the way we take photos and travel.

About two weeks after this, we tried surfing http://two2travel.com/tag/surfing/ for the first time too, and anybody who’s had the chance to stand up on that surfboard and have a long ride would understand how surreal and great the feeling is. We could only imagine how it had been for these kids.

These free surf lessons are an amazing gift of discovery that I’m sure they were all grateful to receive. Thank you to Elaine Abonal of Surfista Travels for inviting us to cover! We admire your big hearts. :)

Owen Ballesteros & Nikka Corsino are trigger-happy travelers from the Philippines. They both swear by the sharpness of Nikon and almost always carry a packet of instant coffee when traveling. Photography is their bread and butter, their passion, and sometimes the only thing that prevents them from killing each other. If you have offers of work, collaborations, or an endless supply of instant coffee, please drop them a message here.

was able to drop by La Union during a media familiarization tour. Sayang lang cause surfing there was not part of the agenda. We did surf in Pagudpud, but I prefer the set-up here in San Juan. Waves seem bigger and I like that the shore is wider.

Hi Edcel, yes San Juan is a good place to learn surfing, the waters are shallow (not as shallow as those in Bagasbas). Btw we’re from La Union, we can show you around San Juan if ever. :)
